If you are overweight, you should be concerned about Metabolic Syndrome. Why? Because Metabolic Syndrome is a serious medical condition that increases your risk of developing diabetes and heart diseases - especially if you are grossly overweight.
According to the US Health Department, Metabolic Syndrome is : "A collection of metabolic risk factors in one individual. The root causes of metabolic syndrome are overweight/obesity, physical activity, and genetic factors..."
What are the symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome? The list of symptoms includes insulin resistance, high blood pressure, excessive weight (especially around the waist) , high cholesterol (triglycerides) and increased levels of uric acid.
Now that you know what cause Metabolic Syndrome and what damage it can do to you, you need to know how to prevent and treat it.
Here's what you can do to prevent and treat Metabolic Syndrome so as to stay healthy and cut the risks of heart failure :-
1) Take part in regular cardio exercises.
One basic cardio exercise that you can do is brisk walking. Brisk walk for half an hour, 5 days a week. But what is brisk walking, you ask? Well, a common definition is to walk fast without exerting yourself too much. Not easy strolling here, you need to feel the adrenaline rush and the heart pumping, although at a comfortable pace.
Others cardio exercises that you can participate in include swimming, biking, jogging or hiking. These exercises are good for your heart as it gets used to more effort and builds up endurance. Exercising regularly also lowers your cholesterol levels and helps burn unwanted fat.
2) Reduce your daily calories intake.
Avoid unhealthful food with lots of fat content as these can make you gain weight. Avoid high calorie food unless you are very hungry. Most of the food you eat are extras and turn into fats and can create problems for your heart. As you can see above, losing unwanted weight is the way to go to fight Metabolic Syndrome.
The Journal of the American Heart Association recently quoted research showing that men who did brisk walks had a 26 % less chance of getting Metabolic Syndrome. Men who were highly fit had a 50 % lowered less chance of getting Metabolic Syndrome. The figures for women were 20 % and 63 % respectively.
So there you have it. The best method for preventing and dealing with Metabolic Syndrome is engaging in regular cardio-respiratory exercises and a reduction in daily calorie intake. This can be done if you put in some conscious effort. Nothing is impossible and like Nike says in their advertisement, Just Do It! Ok, consult a doctor if you are not sure what to do.
