Night time snacking can be a very difficult habit to break and advertisements from fast food restaurants about the so called "fifth meal" definitely don't help matters any. It's common for dieters to do well all day only to throw away all their work with late night snacking.
What went wrong? You eat right all day, make real effort to stick to your healthy habits and then you're at home eating a large dinner with seconds, maybe even a dessert and polish off the day with a midnight snack. A calorie is a calorie so there's no real reason to avoid eating in the evening. It is not when you are eating, but how much you are eating.
Skipping meals often leads to over eating at night. If you didn't get enough to eat during the day chances are you will end up eating way more than your intended to at night. Some of us like to think that meals eaten at night don't count, because no one is watching or because its not an official meal. Eating your daily three meals lowers the chances of you overeating at night significantly. The less you eat during the day, the more you will consume with wild abandon at night time.
For many people night time is their most relaxing time of the day, a time of day where they let their hair down and really let their daily stressed go. While other people may fill this time with their to-do list, either way your evening can turn into a relaxing bag of chips or a stress filled mindless eating episode of a bag of chips. Eating when your mind it somewhere else is one of the biggest ways to eat more than you intended. When your mind is occupied you aren't even tasting or enjoying the food.
If you truly are hungry at night time then eat something light. Enjoy whatever it is and don't do anything else while you are eating. You shouldn't watch TV or surf on the internet while you are eating. You will never feel satisfied this way and end up eating a lot more. Make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night. Well rested people tend to eat less.
Be careful about what you are consuming at night time, a lot of these foods can cause indigestion causing you to eat more food the next day. Sleep helps your body to regulate hormones and if you are not getting enough quality sleep at night your body can produce more hormones that trigger your body to store fat and stimulate your appetite.
To eat less at night, make sure that you are eating enough during the day. Never skip meals, and do not let yourself get too hungry that you will eat anything that crosses your mind at night. Get enough sleep, and deal with your daily stressed with exercise, reading or writing. Follow these steps is easy and they will help you to deal with your late night cravings.
