If you are overweight and have struggled to lose this excess body fat in the past along with feeling tired and lacking energy it may be that your metabolism has slowed down. If you have a history of low calorie diets and yo yo dieting this can cause your metabolic engine to slow down in an ancient 'survival mode' in an attempt to stop starvation.
Even very low fat, high carbohydrate or low protein diets can have the same effect along with chronic under eating and even excessive cardiovascular exercise. You are in fact teaching your body the exact opposite of what you want to achieve. You want to lose body fat but your body has now become extremely efficient at storing it and this makes future weight loss almost impossible.
It is ironic that most of the diet programs that claim to help you get rid of body fat end up making it harder for you in the long run as they use harsh metabolism decreasing diets that do the opposite of what is needed. They also almost never require proper exercise in the way of muscle building and maintaining exercise which keeps your metabolism from slowing when calories are reduced. Any wonder diets fail 95% of the time.
If you wish to reverse this situation, rebuild your metabolism and coax your body into giving up its fat stores you will need a new and different approach. First you will have to be consistent and make up your mind to ditch the yo yo dieting and exercise regime.
It is going to take the right combination of metabolism stimulating exercise and metabolism stimulating nutrition (not dieting) done consistently over a period of time.
This word consistent is important as nothing will undermine the boosting up of your metabolism like inconsistency. In fact, if you stop and start and skip meals and workouts often you will not even get off the ground.
If you have been on low calorie diets in the past along with inadequate proper exercise it is likely that you will have lost lean muscle tissue.
This is where strength training exercise functions at its best. If done properly within just a few weeks that tissue can be rebuilt and give your fat burning machinery the kick start it needs.
Your muscle tissue is what drives your metabolism and strength training exercise is the only type of activity that will address this. Forget the walking, jogging or anything 'cardio' as this will not tone up the muscular system in the manner required to boost metabolism and get your body cranking again. Keep those 'cardio' activities as recreational activities which are part of an active lifestyle but never ever replace a proper exercise program with them.
After your metabolism is back up and running properly aided by your strength training program, it will take continued "stoking" of the metabolic furnace to keep it there. You will need to keep feeding it fuel or the fire will die down again. This means you need to overhaul your eating plan and forget starving and start feeding your body.
Your eating must support your exercise program so you have enough energy to put the required effort and intensity into the program for it to work. Eat every 2-3 hours which will give you between 5-7 meals each day. Make sure there is around 20 grams of protein in each one and the balance made up with raw and cooked vegetables. Try and ditch the processed food and start cooking from scratch with whole foods for best results.
The secret to eating this way is to prepare your meals the night before and take them with you wherever you go so there is no reason (excuse) to eat what you shouldn't. Focus solely on eating what you should and there will be no room for eating what you shouldn't.
The good news is, these same nutrition and training principles will work for you no matter how long you have been on the diet roller coaster. Work your muscles and feed your body it is that simple. Try this sensible healthy way to take off the fat and you will see it works.
