There is plenty of good news around this week for women who enjoy the odd tipple but are conscious of how it may affect their weight. Latest studies suggest that normal-weight women who drink a light to moderate amount of alcohol appear to gain less weight and have a lower risk of becoming overweight and obese than non-drinkers, according to a report in Medical News Today.
Researchers at Brigham Hospital in Boston asked more than 19,000, normal-weight US women aged 39 or older how many alcoholic beverages they typically drank in a day, and then tracked the women for around 13 years. They found that women who drink a couple of glasses of red wine, beer or spirits a day are better at keeping the pounds off than women who do not drink at all, according to a study published this week.
The thing is though, should we really be surprised by the results of this research? I certainly wasn鈥檛 surprised when I read about it! Because it鈥檚 all down to the M-word of course (moderation). I have always maintained that eating, drinking and doing exercise in moderation is the key to achieving a balanced lifestyle 鈥?a lifestyle where weight control will simply not be an issue.
How many times have you seen a thin person eating chocolate and wondered how they manage to stay so thin? How many times have you asked the same question when you鈥檝e seen a thin person out drinking? Well I would like to bet that these people manage to stay thin because they have managed to get their lifestyle balance right. They may have a drink or eat the wrong types of food occasionally, but it will be just that-occasionally, I bet it isn鈥檛 something they do to excess on a daily basis.
I would also like to bet that they incorporate a moderate amount of exercise into their daily routine (whether you know about it or not). They don鈥檛 have to be attending a gym or going out jogging every night to be exercising. They may walk to work, they may do a lot of walking as part of their job, they may run up and down stairs at home for all I know but I can assure you that they will be doing some form of exercise.
So, as I have already said, if you enjoy a drink, the great news is that it can actually help you to lose weight, but only if like everything else, the drink is taken in moderation. If you are worried about your weight try to develop the healthy balanced lifestyle I have been talking about. Try to eat a healthy balanced diet where possible but don鈥檛 deny yourself the odd treat here and there because otherwise you鈥檒l just end up being miserable.
Also don鈥檛 forget to do a moderate amount of exercise. Research shows that exercise which can be built into a routine is often the most beneficial because once it becomes routine you don鈥檛 even know you鈥檙e doing it. Good examples of this are getting off the bus a few stops early and walking the rest of the way to work or school or using the stairs instead of the lift every time you need to go up a few floors.
