It is surprising how many people have it wrong when it comes to losing weight. They think it is all about reducing food intake. The old calories in, calories out equation that we have used for the past forty odd years that has now been well proven that it is only just a small part of the picture.
The problem is reducing calories does not address the real problem as to why someone has become overweight. This is that their metabolic engine has slowed down and they are no longer burning as much enough fuel as they should be. So the excess fuel (calories) that they are not burning gets stored as fat that makes the human body larger, heavier and unhealthier.
So, to reverse this situation and get your metabolism (your body's engine) back into good health and burning maximum calories we first must give our fat burning machinery a good tune up. It is our lean body mass, more specifically our muscles that are our greatest friend in the weight loss battle. The muscles are where fat is burned for energy so their healthy is paramount and this means they must be in good condition - strong and healthy.
Now if you don't work your muscles much as most of us don't in this increasingly sedentary modern world there is no way that they stay strong without intentional exercise that works them directly. So the first step towards a slim body is a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise. This is the only exercise that will increase your metabolic rate.
Don't expect low intensity 'fun' things like walking, jogging or cycling or any other 'cardio' type activity to do this as they cannot, will-not, never-ever work your muscles as they need to be worked to increase the metabolism.
The end result of this type of exercise program is that your muscles are going to be burning more fuel round the clock not only when you are being active but when you are resting or sleeping as well. This is your key to weight loss not calorie reduction. To be able to exercise with some effort (and you will need to if you wish to make a difference to your fat burning machinery) you need lots of good quality food to stoke up the fire.
If your belief system has trouble accepting this is what you need to do then you had better get used to remaining overweight. Even worse is the fact that your excess weight problem is going to continue to increase over time as you get older when you get a natural decrease in the metabolic rate as the years tick by. This is going to set the stage for nasty chronic 'lifestyle' killer diseases which could well cut your life short.
But this is not going to happen to you as you now know what you need to do to keep yourself slim and healthy. You are going to start and never stop with your strength training program so your muscles get the boost they need to do their job properly. That is to burn up the fat and sugar in your bloodstream before it gets piled around your waist and other parts of your body. All that is required from you is a bit of effort and 2-3 sessions each week which is well inside anyone's capabilities.
