It's essential that all new mums realise that cutting calories does not always result in losing weight. Often the key to losing weight for everyone, not just new mums, is burning fat and building muscle. Now when I mention building muscle I am not talking about body building but you need to have more lean muscle as the more you have the higher your metabolic rate. If you reduce your calorie intake too much you can go into a type of starvation mode and your metabolic rate slows down. This results in your body retaining fat as it stores it in reserves just in case it is needed.
Mums looking to lose weight should not be too obsessed with losing pounds but more with losing fat. It is always essential to use 'measures' such as reduced waist and hip measurements rather than looking to see how many pounds have been shed. It is the amount of fat which is lost which is the important thing and sometimes as a mum loses fat and begins to tone up her weight may actually remain static.
So if burning fat and building muscle is essential for mums looking at losing baby weight how does she go about it?
1 Firstly it is essential that all new mums follow a nutritious eating plan where a balanced choice from the five main food groups is taken. Only eat when you are hungry and drink lots of water to feel energised. You do need some fats in your eating plan but make sure these are the healthy type like olive oil. To overcome hunger pains and avoid eating junk food have a supply of nutritious healthy snacks always on hand. Eating throughout the day will stop food cravings and avoid your body going into that starvation mode. Cravings are the biggest reason why new mums don't lose baby weight and get discouraged. These are obviously to be avoided if you're after losing baby weight.
2 One of the most natural ways a new mum can slim down and lose baby weight is to breastfeed. A women's body burns around 500 calories a day when breastfeeding and a lot of this comes from fat stores built up during pregnancy. This is a therefore a great and easy way of losing baby weight and is probably the most natural way ever. Don't worry about the quality and supply of your breast milk; as long as you are eating nutritious food and drinking lots of fluids then your milk will be exactly what your baby needs.
3 Another essential part for new mums after losing baby weight is to take regular exercise. I don't mean that you have to be down at the gym for every minute of the day but what new mums need to do is more activity, where the heart rate is increased for approximately 20 minutes about 5 times per week. You can be a little bit creative here and do things like walking to the shops instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the elevator etc. Also, as mentioned above it is important that you do some strength exercises to build up a little bit more muscle. This will also tend to tone the body in places that were stretched and distorted during pregnancy and delivery. Start slowly with your exercises and build it up over time; it will soon become part of your regular routine.
