It is easy to spot the developed world's overweight problem. Just look around any area where the public gather for the telltale large belly and you will likely spot two out of every three adults, and likely many children as well. The cause of this is easy - too much food and not enough physical activity - but the solution is not so easy.
Many people would love scientists to find a 'magic pill' that will remove this fat and increase fitness but this is never going to happen. Somehow overweight people must accept that the only way it is going to happen is changing their activity levels and the way they eat for the long haul.
But this is not what they want to hear so they continue to become even more overweight and the consequences mount - increased risk of disease particularly the 'big three' heart disease, cancer and diabetes. You would think it would be easier to simply knuckle down and start a proper exercise program and improve eating habits over a period of time rather than risk a lower quality of life in the short term and the very real possibility of it being cut short in the long term.
Even though excess body fat is difficult to lose it can be done with small changes so that it is not so difficult. The simple addition of a strength training program will add fat burning muscle tissue to the body so that extra fuel (calories) is being burnt up for energy. Even stopping the weight increasing would be a very good goal to aim for to start with. If you have no increase for a few months then you can tweak things a bit more and slowly start the journey back to healthier body weight.
Whether you like it or not it is virtually impossible to lose body fat if you do not engage in routine exercise that works your muscular system. If you do not like it, you will have to find a way to 1) change your attitude or 2) remain overweight and know that disease is stalking waiting to pounce.
Losing weight just like any other long term goal is not something you just do once. It is a journey of hundreds of small steps. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes not so easy. The second most important thing you can do to speed the weight loss is of course look at your eating habits. Refined and processed foods are bad news and contribute to weight gain with every bite. Get rid of these and you will be doing yourself a huge favor.
Start eating more quality whole natural foods that have not been mucked around with by man. If it has a food label it has been altered in some way and will not help you lose weight. Things like an orange, a steak, a sweet potato, a tomato do not have food labels. Why would they need one? They have not been destroyed by tons of toxic chemicals and unhealthy processing methods.
So to summarize, get started on your proper strength training program and ditch the processed foods as much as possible and watch that fat come off slowly but surely. Each step of the way will bring a smile to your face and will be so worth it.
