Nobody wants to feel or to look less than their absolute best. Most of us take pride in the clothes we wear, the accents we choose, our hairstyles, our makeup and even the cars we drive. How we present ourselves to the world is our statement about who we are and who we want to be. When we look our best others take notice. When we look our best, we feel our best.
Why is it then, that when it comes to our bodies we don't use the same care or have the same amount of pride? So many of us tend to drop the ball when it comes to controlling our weight. However, those extra pounds make just as much of a statement to the world as our designer outfits.
What does your body say about you? Does it tell the world that you care about yourself? Or does your body say, "I lack the self-discipline to eat right and to exercise"?
None of us want to make the subconscious statement to the world. Even though our society has come a long way toward accepting all body types, we know that there is an unspoken discrimination against people who are overweight. None of us want to subject ourselves to that unspoken evaluation.
When you are overweight it can feel like the entire world is judging you. An innocent glance can feel like an accusation. A warm smile can be transformed into a shameful reminder of the extra helping of dessert the night before. If you have ever avoided going out because of your weight; if you tend to shy away from mirrors; if you dread swimming season and the thought of putting on a bathing suit - if any of those things seem familiar then you know that it is time to make a change.
It can be very tempting to try to take short cuts. There are so many over the counter diet supplements that promise miracles and only deliver disappointments. There are so many fad diets out there that leave you weak, dehydrated and starved without giving you the results you want.
The truth is, there are no short cuts to losing weight. Becoming overweight doesn't happen overnight and neither does losing that weight. It takes time, effort and a real commitment to living a healthier lifestyle and making healthier choices.
The biggest obstacle for most people in their quest to shed unwanted body fat is willpower. Learning to say no to yourself can be a challenge. Learning to make wiser choices about what you eat requires a lot of conscious effort. Forcing yourself to become more active requires a total restructuring of your normal routine.
Most people end up getting overwhelmed and frustrated when they realize that losing weight isn't going to just happen. Trying to do it alone can be almost impossible. That is why it is so important to discuss your decision to lose weight with your doctor. Your doctor can help you find ways to lose weight quickly and healthily, as well as to help you keep on track with your weight loss effort. If you are thinking about trying to embrace a healthier you, don't go it alone. Talk to your doctor about how you can start looking and feeling your best through healthy weight loss.
