One of the main benefits of sticking with a weight loss program (Meaning: making the choice NOT to cheat or quit) long enough to get results, is the way you are going to feel about yourself.
Let's face it, knowing that you are over weight, possibly obese, is a far more complex issue than just pounds and inches.
The fact is, it impacts your entire personality - when you are gaining weight (losing the battle) and when you are losing weight (winning).
Body weight and body image become a tint or a lense which influences almost everything that has anything to do with the way you feel about you and the way you perceive others regard, view, or value you.
You can know in your heart that you are a good person, that you have a pleasant personality, and that people love, honor, and respect you. YET you feel terrible when you catch your reflection in a store window as you walk by. And it is that sensation that really becomes the governor of how you feel about yourself. What others say will help for a little while, but it won't change how your really feel.
So how DO we turn this around?
How do we get our good feelings back? How do we start to feel like a winner again?
By winning. By getting a few victory notches on your belt. There is no winner or victor or victory, without a battle.
It is a FIGHT to regain your well being. And the real battle is won or lost in your head - not on the scale.
We start our winning ways by winning 'the little ones'. The 'little'choices. Saying 'no' to that 'little' goodie this hour, the next hour, the rest of this day. Saying yes to moving, getting in motion today.
Did you make the decision to work out Monday - Wednesday - Friday? Is it Monday? Then work out. Did you make the decision to walk those days? Then walk. Did you make the decision to eat two types of fruit every day? Then eat your fruit - not candy or pastry.
These are hourly and daily choices that cause us to start winning.
That's winning - not whining! Why? Because they are the choices that will lead you to your final, and continued victory displayed on the bathroom scale.
They are the 'little' choices that will make you feel like a winner again because you now have confidence in your own sense of control and self-discipline which propel you forward in regaining real control in your life.
How can this be true? Because the very absence of that sense of control has left you feeling "Out of Control" and helpless in the past. AND it was making the wrong 'little' choices repeated over time that got us into, or at least contributed to our problem.
The good news that we get on the scale in the morning seems to be THE GOAL at first. Actually, the reading on the scale is only a score card - a progress chart.
The REAL win is not just in the number of pounds we lose. The real win is in lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack, being able to move, restored energy, the clothes we can wear, and the way we look. These are the "Why's" our reasons for losing weight in the first place.
The Biggest win of all though, is in how you feel about yourself now. The number of pounds is just a reference point to illustrate a body condition that has you jumping for joy because you feel so good - physically and inwardly. The real you is back again.
And that winning feeling spills over into virtually every other area of your life. You see the whole world differently now. And you did it by making the right 'little' choices one hour at a time - when nobody else was looking.
And baby, look at you now.
When your 'why's' are big enough, your how's are easy.
