     It is strange how many people view their muscles as objectionable and not wanted. They think that if they exercise them directly they will get big and bulky like a bodybuilder. But this is not so and strength training exercise is the most effective tool on the planet for getting and staying in shape.

For the longest time people have associated strength training with sports like bodybuilding or weightlifting but they are just distant cousins. Very few men or women possess the genetic capacity to develop large muscles. We really should be more concerned about losing too much muscle tissue through not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity especially as we get older.

As two thirds of us in this world are considered overweight we need a long term solution for our health and that solution has nothing to do with dieting or food restriction. You cannot live your life always worrying about eating too much food. The easier and better way is to take your body from a fat storing model to a fat burning model.

This is where muscles come in and our body weight is made up of up to 50 percent muscle tissue and if we do not work them regularly they become weak and flabby. When this happens they burn less fuel (calories) so more gets stored as fat. Yes, around the tummy, hips and wherever else the body decides to store it.

If you can exercise those muscles directly with strength training exercise 2-3 times each week they will start working for you and not against you. Think of them as your friends or even factory workers, gobbling up that excess body fat that is spoiling your looks and threatening your health.

Only strength training can give you the benefits that a boosted metabolism will give you in the battle of the bulge. Endurance type activities like walking or jogging or other recreational 'fun' things will not tone your muscles in the way they need to be toned to provide the necessary change in the metabolic rate.

When your highly active muscle tissue is toned up and strong it chews through more calories every single minute of the day. This can help you control your weight or lose weight even when you are asleep. This is your secret weapon for weight loss. Nothing else can even come close to it. It is not instant (nothing is) but each week, each month and each year you will be closer to your goal of becoming slim and trim and more importantly staying that way.

So if you have become overweight and do not exercise, the easiest way to turn it around is to get started on a strength training program and never stop. Although it might be an inconvenience to have to go along to a gym a couple of times each week surely that is less inconvenient than continuing to have your weight spiral out of control and risk the health issues that come with it. It is a no-brainer really isn't it?
