Sick of that jelly belly that jiggles when you walk and hangs embarrassingly over your belt? Here are three tips to get rid of it.
1. Increase your intake of fat, but not just any fat. Research has shown that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids leads to weight loss, better health, and more energy. The American diet is stuffed full of trans fat and saturated fats but light when it comes to omega-3 fatty acids. You can increase your consumption of these fats by adding fish to your diet such as salmon, herring, and tuna. Omega-3 is also found in olive oil, nuts and seeds. A mere 6 grams of Omega-3 can lead to weight loss, including belly fat, without any other change in diet. Two tablespoons of ground flaxseed provides 3.5 grams just by itself. Sprinkle flaxseed on cereal, sandwiches and salads. It has a nutty taste. One tablespoon of flaxseed oil provides all you need and more, 7.3 grams. Use flaxseed oil as a substitute for olive oil in salad dressing, or use a half flaxseed oil and half olive oil mixture. Supplements work as well. Take the supplements before each meal.
2. Eat a cup of cream soup before lunch and dinner. It has been shown that having an appetizer, salad, or cup of soup, about 15 minutes before the meal leads to fat loss. Your brain needs about 20 minutes from when you start eating to recognize it's full. Give it a head start by leisurely dining on a salad, by the time you get to the entree you'll probably feel fuller and eat less. What works even better is a cup of cream soup, or soup with an olive oil or cheese boost, such as minestrone with a tablespoon of olive drizzled on the top and a tablespoon of Parmesan cheese. The fat in the cheese, cream, or oil quickly signals the brain it's had enough food. Fat also takes longer to digest so you feel fuller longer.
3. Keep your blood sugar on an even level. When you consume foods high in sugar or white flour your blood sugar spikes which signals your body to produce insulin. The higher the amount of sugar, the more insulin is produced. The more insulin the more of the glucose is converted to fat for storage. Keep you blood sugar level and the insulin spikes won't happen. Do that by combining a food heavy in starch or sugar with a protein or a fat. The protein and fat take longer to digest so they enter the blood stream as glucose more slowly and no spike. It's better to spread your morning toast with cream cheese or peanut butter rather than with jam. Or have the toast with a scrambled egg. Sugar obviously will spike your blood sugar, unless you eat it with fiber, that's what happens when you eat a whole orange. The fiber takes longer to digest so the sugar doesn't enter your blood stream as quickly. Drinking a glass of orange juice means the sugar hits your system almost immediately.
