Harvard University conducted a study that shows a powerful tactic that will make ANY exercise program or workout MUCH more effective.
The researchers studied over 80 cleaning attendants from 7 hotels. Naturally, these cleaners receive a lot of exercise from their jobs. They average about 25 minutes to clean a room and cleaned 15 rooms per day on average. Their work includes a lot of exercise from vacuuming, picking up objects, scrubbing, etc.
Even though the maids got a lot of exercise from their work, the researchers questioned whether they knew all that exercise was good for their health. So the researchers decided to make the maids very aware of how beneficial the exercise they got from their work was to their health. They wanted to see if the increased awareness of the health benefits increased the results they received from the exercise.
The questions they were looking for answers to were... Would being more aware of the health benefits actually improve their health, help them lose weight, and lower their blood pressure in comparison to the other maids that didn't realize their work was actually 揺xercise?
So they created two groups of hotel maids:
The first group was made aware of the health benefits of the work they performed and that they were actually exercising. They were told how many calories they were burning and given information explaining how many calories each activity they performed on a daily basis burned.
The second group was the control group. They were told the benefits of exercise but were not told how many calories they were burning at their job each day. And they were not told that their work was actually a good form of exercise.
The study lasted for four weeks. They made sure none of the maids changed any of their habits or routines outside of work including eating, smoking or exercise. This was to prevent any non work activity from having an effect on the study.
Also, the researchers made sure that the workloads of each group remained the same throughout the whole four weeks.
The results were very interesting.
The group of maids that were informed of the health benefits of their work as well as the amount of calories they were actually burning ended up losing a significant amount of weight, lowered their body mass index, and lowered their blood pressure.
The control group that was not informed of these benefits showed no improvements at all.
Why is that?
Remember, these two groups received the SAME amount of exercise. The only difference was one group was MADE AWARE that their work was in fact a good form of exercise and how beneficial it was to their health.
The reason one group benefited so much reinforces the fact that our mind and the way we think has a tremendous effect on the results we see.
There is a great lesson in this study. If you truly understand the health benefits to your exercise program, and strongly believe that the workouts you are doing will drastically improve your body, your results will dramatically improve.
So if you want to get leaner and burn more fat, you need to understand how your workouts are benefiting you and mentally visualize the results you're getting.
Do not underestimate how powerful your mind really is. If you're eating the proper foods, and exercising in the most efficient way, make sure that you are also actively thinking in your mind about how those foods are dramatically helping your body, making you stronger, making you leaner, improving爕our energy and health, and so on.
Another benefit of this "mental programming" is that it trains you to actually want to avoid junk foods, because you want to be able to think about how everything you eat is improving your body instead.
