What a best way to celebrate the Fourth of July than by going to a Parade? This year, I went to the Pacific Palisades Parade organized since 1967 by the Palisades Americanism Parade Association (PAPA). The Grand Marshall was actress and animal activist Linda Blair (The Exorcist). Interestingly enough, the town's honorary mayor of Pacific Palisades is actor Steve Guttenberg, famous for his roles in "Three Men and a Baby," "Police Academy" and "Short Circuit." Now, the big question, "Will I succumb to the temptation of eating junk food?"
Before I answer the big question, (points of suspension) let me tell you about the parade. The parade opened with five skydivers landing on Sunset Blvd at Swarthmore, led by Carey Peck, son of the latest actor Gregory Peck, who had lived in Pacific Palisades. It was just spectacular! Undoubtedly, Bobbie Farberow, proprietor of Mort's Palisades Deli, who was this year's PAPA president, and her committee did a great job.
U.S. Flags and souvenirs displaying the red, white and blue were just everywhere. One could feel the Independence's spirit and a sense of a strong patriotism. Rightly, the parade theme was "Celebrating Those Who Served So Honorably." The audience welcomed the different celebrities, who included the hosts from the John and Ken show from KFI AM. The parade also featured City Councilman-elect Bill Rosendahl, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Assemblywoman Fran Pavley, as well as Los Angeles school board member David Tokofsky.
One of the highlights, not so common, was the participation of almost 100 dogs strutting their Independence costumes. Surprisingly, they all got along ... no fighting ... just each one wanting to steal the show ...
Since my purpose was to celebrate in a healthy way, let me tell you whether I succeeded or not. What do you think? ... Yes, I did succeed! Not only I enjoyed the parade, but also I ate healthy! I brought all my fruits, protein drink, garbanzo salad, and plenty of water. Besides, Pinocchio in Cucina had exquisite Italian meals, fresh and delicious. I hope you enjoy this parade too through the photos. I will see you next year for another "Fourth of July Celebration." Maybe next year, we will see 100s of cats instead of dogs, or maybe it will rain cats and dogs.
Congratulations to the organizers and to the Pacific Palisades Community for a superb parade and for presenting once again the annual fireworks at Palisades High School displayed by Pyro Spectaculars in Rialto. Moreover, an outstanding ovation to the American Legion Post 283 for starting the tradition of this parade after World War II by hosting family picnics and gathering to show their patriotism. Incredible, all the way since 1948 until today, the Legion is still supporting the event. In the meantime, remember, your commitment is my commitment "Official Overweight? NO MORE!" Let's continue with the celebration of losing weight and keeping the weight off and saluting the Pacific Palisades Community for their traditional parade.
