The South Beach Diet has been around for a quite some time now and still seems to be quite popular. However, the question that keeps popping up is: “Is the South Beach Diet Safe?” You need the answer to this question before starting any diet.
So I’d like to give you a brief explanation of this diet, to help you understand why people ask this question and whether it is safe or not.
The South Beach Diet And How It Works
Cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatston, developed the South Beach Diet and wrote this popular book. This diet is basically a reduced (not low) carbohydrate diet that emphasizes good carbohydrates for healthier blood sugar levels.
Although many dieters considered the South Beach Diet to be just another fad, it apparently is here to stay. Perhaps this is due to the books ability to give a good education on proper nutrition and how to keep blood sugar levels in check. Of course, the main attraction of this diet is that people are losing a lot of weight on it.
**The 3 Phases Of The South Beach**
Phase 1
This is a low carb phase that causes most of the controversy, but it is also the phase that you lose the most weight on. This phase gets you going in the right direction and only lasts 14 days. Many people lose 10-13 pounds on this phase, but it is the toughest phase to get through.
Phase 2
If you make it through the first phase, phase 2 and 3 will be a piece of cake (oops, I mean steak). This phase allows you to eat more healthy carbohydrates, healthy fat, and lean meats. This is where you learn to make good eating choices. Your hunger will be satisfied while you continue to lose weight.
Phase 3
More foods are introduced in this phase and it makes for easy weight management.
**Is The South Beach Diet Safe?**
The South Beach Diet emphasizes eating the right amount of fiber and fats to satisfy your hunger while controlling your weight. It also encourages you to avoid those foods that give you empty calories and are only causing you to gain weight. This can’t be bad.
This Diet is also about balancing nutrition. Of course, the most difficult thing about the South Beach Diet is phase one, but that only lasts 14 days. I personally believe that this diet is safe and effective, but if you suspect you have any physical problems you should see your doctor before going on any diet.
