The Power of Words - an excerpt from the book "Healing What's Eating You"
Every breath is precious. You can survive
without food for quite some time, forty to ninety
days depending on your age and condition. You
can survive without water for five or even seven
days. But how long can you hold your breath?
Even the best free divers can only survive five or
seven minutes without the breath. Most people
can barely hold their breath for one hundred
seconds. Naturally the breath is greatly needed
and appreciated for life itself. Our thoughts also
have tremendous energy. If you combine the
power of your thoughts and put the breath of life
into these thoughts and expel them they take a
life of their own and once released can never be
called back.
Think of your breath as beginning at
the base of your body where the perinium is-
between your anus and your genital area. The
breath should begin at the base of your body
and you should bring the breath up through the
back of your spine and then expel it out and
down the front of your body. The breath used
in this way goes through a circular path so that
the breath that is expelled is taken back into
your body. Keeping this type of circular breath
in mind, you might understand that every word
you speak you literally consume it back into your
own body. In other words, you eat your own
words. Whatever thought that you put forth with
the power of the breath, that is, each word, has
tremendous meaning and importance. It is said
that every word you speak is either life giving
or death dealing. It is either spoken with love or
without love. Words have great power and should
not be given energy without thought. It goes
back to the old adage that if you don’t have
anything nice to say, then simply don’t say it.
Most spiritual teachers are very frugal with
their words because they understand the power
you are wielding with each word you utter, either
good or bad. This should give you a totally new
outlook on what words you speak. For, if in fact,
you eat the energy you expel with each word
you utter, this should make you very circumspect
in what you then have to say.
Some western people make bad mouthing
others an art form. The quick retort, the searing
comeback, the last word zingers that end all
conversations, are all looked upon as social skills.
Well, they may sound clever to the unknowing
person but they just perpetuate negative energy.
Once that steely barb has left your dewy lips
those words are forever traveling the sound
waves of the universe.
I know from personal experience that
this is a difficult lesson to learn, as we are so
entrenched in talking stink about others. Dissing
other people is not just a national sport it is a self
defense tool that we think is protected by the
constitution. Think of the power of words and you
can forget about that sing song ditty, sticks and
stones will break my bones but words
will never hurt me, think again. Remember
when somebody said something to you that
just crushed your soul? They may not have even
meant it or weren’t even aware that they said it,
but it just made you feel like two inches tall and
you felt like withdrawing from the human race?
Well, think of the damage you might be doing
to others by your words. Think of the damage
you are really doing to your own energy by
perpetuating harm.
Whatever thought that you put forth with
the power of the breath, that is each word, has
tremendous meaning and importance. You may
very well remember every word spoken to you
that made you feel special, really unique, loved
or appreciated. Could anything be as gentle,
kind and sweet as those words? Measure the
power that those words had on you then and
might still have today.
Isn’t it a far better thing to withhold
judgment and condemnation in our words. If you
are tempted to say something nasty, think of
when you might look back and be so glad you
never uttered them? Words of love, gratitude
and statements of truth that perpetuate
goodness are jewels to be dispersed as the
precious gifts that they are, timely, not frivolous
and always to be wrapped in good intentions.
Another thing to be noted here is that for
every force that you propel out into the universe,
it shall return to you three fold. Good or bad
energy, all of it makes the circle of life, back to
it’s original source.
Now that you know that your every word
has power, use your words wisely. Take notice of
the phrases that just tumble our of your mouth
without you even being aware of them. A lot of
us have things we constantly say to ourselves,
like “you idiot!”, “there you go again dummy”,
“look who’s screwing up again as usual”, “what a
jerk I am”, “dodo brain”, “such a schmuck” and
on and on. Whatever your “blah blah blah” is,
recognize it for what it is, diarrhea of the mouth
and brain. There may be a lot of negative crap
that just flows out of you like a sewer and do you
really want to eat that? So, stop it! Make notes,
write them down so you can make up a list of
positive epitaphs to hurl at yourself. Say things
like, “clever woman”, “always learning”, “thank
you, for this and that”, “wonder what I’m learning
now?” Thank you is really the best one to start
off with to get into the swing of speaking well of
yourself and others.
Once you start to get rid of your negative
litany, you will notice how much of an affect that
self bad mouthing actually had on you. You will
also notice that the “atta girls” are much nicer
to listen to for yourself and others. Know too,
that other people will notice how you speak of
yourself and they will naturally act and respond
to your self treatment and attitude and react
and respond to you in kind.
