Working as a weight loss coach for the past 10 years I have found that most people understand HOW to lose weight. The average person gets that if they eat fewer calories and exercise more their weight will drop. In fact, many clients I talk with could probably author their own book on how to diet based on all of the tactics and strategies they have tried in the past. The problem that people encounter is how to apply these weight loss suggestions to their daily lives.
This article addresses this specific problem and will help you move out of the "learning" mode and into the "action" mode which is where you need to be in order to see progress.
When moving from learning to action you will encounter many "thought barriers". These are thoughts that pop in your head that convince you that the timing is not right for action.
Thought barriers occur because your body and mind prefer things to stay the way they are. So if you are currently inactive or your diet is mainly made up of sweet treats and refined carbs you have trained your body to live at this level and it tends to want to stay put.
This means that you will need to make a conscious effort to move into action, yet this is not a difficult thing to do and really your thoughts can work for you when you are ready to take the leap.
Start by putting your focus on the positive things that weight loss can bring into your life and don't let yourself drift into the negative. For instance if you say to yourself, "Losing weight will help me walk up steps without getting out of breath." Don't ruin this positive thought by saying, "But losing weight is going to take me so long." This type of see-sawing between positive and negative thinking keeps you stagnated.
When the negative or limiting thoughts come in (which they will) simply say CANCEL and let them go as best you can while you bring your focus back to the positive. Think of it like cresting a wave. The negative thought is like a wave that threatens to crash down on you but if you just ride it out you will easily drift over it and let it pass.
Then start to take small actions, there are so many things that you can do to start acting in a way that promotes weight loss and you can start simple, why not eat every meal today mindfully, paying attention to the food as you chew it or how about taking a 5 minute walk just to get outside and feel the fresh air.
By making small shifts you will not overwhelm yourself and you will find that you can overcome the thought barriers that were making it difficult to apply the weight loss suggestions to your life.
