Do you feel like no matter what you do, you can’t lose weight? You have been on every diet, tried to exercise, eat healthier food, yet the scale doesn’t budge? You wonder why you even try anymore to lose weight or get in shape.
Even though there are thousands of diet books, weight loss products and programs, exercise equipment and gyms, 66% of Americans are overweight and 33% of them are obese. How can this be? We have so much information and resources, yet we keep getting heavier.
The reason is diets don’t work. Of all the people who go on a diet 95% of them will gain all or most of the weight back within a short period of time. Eating a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis are essential for vibrant health, yet why is this so difficult for most people?
The reason comes down to our thinking and beliefs around diet and exercise. What do you think about when starting a diet? Do you think about all the foods you have to give up? Do you believe it is really hard work to eat healthy? Are you counting the days until you can stop the diet? Do you believe you don’t have time for exercise?
These sorts of thoughts and beliefs keep us from focusing on what we want. What is your goal for losing weight? Is it to eat as few calories as possible and feel terrible until you can go off the diet? I doubt it. However, what are you focusing on? Are you focusing on the negative aspects of losing weight or on the end result?
If you are a mom, think back to a time before kids. What were you thinking about before you got pregnant? Were you focusing on the morning sickness, pain of delivery, sleepless nights, thousands of dirty diapers etc? Or were you focusing on holding your beautiful baby, seeing them smile at you, their first steps and so on? My guess is most of you were focusing on all the wonderful aspects of motherhood and couldn’t wait for your bundle of joy. If we had been thinking about the pain and work of being a mom, some of us may have decided not to have children.
If you want to enjoy losing weight and getting fit, it is essential you change your thinking and beliefs around it. I am not saying, just believe you will be thin and it will happen overnight. What I am saying is as you change your thinking and focus on what you want; you will naturally be drawn to healthier choices and physical activity. When you start thinking and acting like a slender, fit healthy woman, you will start to create that in your life.
One simple step you can do today, is to simply notice what you are thinking about when you think about trying to lose weight or get healthier? Are you thinking about all the things you don’t want? Instead, start to focus on what you do want. What will life be like when you are at your ideal weight? How will you look in that little black dress? How will your husband respond to you when you are feeling great about the way you look? What will you be able to do with your kids when you are fit?
Take a few minutes to create a vivid visualization of yourself at your ideal weight and fitness level. Make it as vivid as possible. Bring in all your senses and emotions. Write out your visualization and start to read it at least twice a day. As you read it, really feel like this is the way you are right now.
At first, this may be somewhat difficult. You may feel resistance and find yourself focusing on all the reasons not to do it. However, I encourage you to stick with this for at least a month and notice the changes in your life.
