A new year brings new resolutions around the world, and for many, a diet resolution tops the list. Along with the thousands of weight loss resolutions also comes a new wave of fad diets. Like the new year, these fad diets come and go just as quickly. But are these fad diets the miracle we are looking for or just a new twist or name on an already existing (and failed) fad diet?
Before you try a new crazy program be sure you know what you are in for. These programs claim quick weight loss (which we all want) and claim success (although not many offer statistical results). Many have catchy names, crazy meal plans or are endorsed by some celebrities to lure you in. Albeit some have been successful more have tried and failed. So review the plan, understand it and make sure it is something you can stick to in order to keep your diet resolution. Here are some quick reviews of some recent fad diets.
Fad Diet Review #1 – The Shoe Diet
Here is one with a catchy name although you don't actually eat shoes. In fact, this isn't really a diet or weight loss plan at all but rather a method of motivating and rewarding yourself for making positive changes. The “shoe” is the motivation and reward for eating right, exercising, losing weight or any change you are trying to incorporate. The “Shoe Diet” written by Dr. Isabelle R. Shaw is a motivational book that has people craving “shoes” instead of food.
Fad Diet Review #2 – Alternate Day Diet
The Alternate Day Diet, also known as the Up Day Down Day Diet, is another fad diet that has recently taken some by storm. In this plan you have a down day in which you only eat 500 calories. This is basically your fasting day. On your up day you eat what ever you want. You keep alternating between a down day and an up day. Although this is a fairly new fad diet the concept sounds familiar. Remember the Calorie Shifting Diet? Same concept different name.
Fad Diet Review #3 – The Biggest Loser Diet
This one has gained popularity with the TV hit show and wasn't just a New Year fad introduction. As far as new diets go this one may be around for awhile and is not really a “fad” anymore. It’s no wonder many people are fascinated with this one, after all, look at what the contestants have achieved.
This weight loss plan is based on their 4, 3, 2, 1 system. This system includes 4 servings of fruits and veggies, 3 lean protein servings, 2 servings of whole grains and 1 serving of extras. The extras can be anything you want so long as it does not exceed 200 calories. They suggest you break out these servings into 5 to 6 smaller meals. Your serving sizes will be based on the amount of calories you are allowed. The calories are determined by taking your current weight times seven.
Exercise is a big part of this incredible weight loss plan. If you are not a fan of exercising, then this may not warrant a second look for you. However, if you are ready to sweat it out, then this diet trend may be your perfect plan. Their exercise program includes both aerobics and strength training.
The Biggest Loser Diet has been endorsed by nutritionists at the University of California and the American Dietetic Association. So this is no fad diet but rather a healthy way to lose weight and deserves a second look for your weight loss resolution.
