Last week I went into a local Vitamin Shoppe to buy some protein powder. The sales associate behind the counter was nice enough to give me six free samples of different pre-workout products. Among these were three packets of "Pre-Surge" by Athletic Edge Nutrition and three packets of "Muscle Marinade" by Purus Labs. I'm a huge fan of pre-workout supplements and stimulants in general so I was psyched about trying these samples!
I first tried the Pre-Surge for the first three days. Overall, I would say it was just ok. It gave me decent energy, but nothing to rave about. Also, it had a weird cinnamon-like after taste that just wouldn't go away. I would take the product again if I received it as a free sample, but I certainly wouldn't spend any money on it.
Now as for the Muscle Marinade, I can honestly say that I have never had a better experience with pre-workout supplements! It was phenomenal. Within just a few minutes I had an euphoric experience with a desire to produce, create, pioneer, and achieve. In my pre-workout supplement experience, I have tried many products including the old N.O. Xplode by BSN, the new N.O. Xplode by BSN, SuperPump250 by Gaspari Nutrition, and Black Powder by MRI. Nothing even comes close to Muscle Marinade by Purus Labs.
After three marvelous days of Muscle Marinade, I wanted to know what was in it that made it so different from all of the other pre-workout supplements I've tried. I read the ingredients list and found that it contained an ingredient known as "1,3-dimethylamylamine."
This sounded pretty scientific and foreign, so I did some research on it and found on Nutraplanet.com that "1,3-dimethylamylamine is a derivative of geranium oil which resembles the body's own chemical messenger, epinephrine (adrenaline). Similar to adrenaline, 1,3-dimethylamylamine exihibits a powerful CNS stimulating ability, for increased energy, mental clarity, and physical performance. 1,3-dimethylamylamine works through a similar pathway as ephedrine, causing an increase in cAMP (the chemical messenger that triggers fat release and provides potent appetite suppression and thermogenic action)."
Reading that this ingredient was extracted from geranium oil made me feel a little better, considering that it was natural and therefore not a drug. Looking at the entire experience in retrospect, I concluded that what gave me that euphoric effect was the combination of the caffeine and 1,3-dimethylamylamine. This has inspired me to make my own pre-workout formula for much cheaper.
You can get caffeine from almost any supplement store for a very good price. I went back to Vitamin Shoppe and got "Advanced Caffeine" by ProLab (only $8), and ordered the 1,3-dimethylamylamine from Nutraplanet.com ($8 as well). I personally mix in 200mg of caffeine, 25mg of 1,3-dimethylamylamine, and some sugar-free Crystal Light to flavor it and voila!
So for a total of $16, I have the best pre-workout formula available, and it lasts for months! I know what it's like to overpay for a pre-workout supplement, so I just wanted to share that with all of my readers out there looking for the latest and greatest supplements to intensify their workouts and give faster results.
