Let's face it. Committing to regular exercise is hard. We all know it is good for us and we should do something physical each and every day. But knowing and doing are two very different things. Luckily there are quick fixes you can do to work fitness into your daily routine without having to go to a gym or workout for hours on end.
While there is no way around the fact that exercise can take some work, it is possible to ease into a fun routine by:
1. Taking it slow at first – Anyone who hasn’t exercised in years, shouldn't dive right into a routine that is too hard and too demanding. This can be self defeating and even a bit dangerous. Before starting anything, it’s a good idea to speak with a physician for recommendations, too. This is especially so if physical activity has not been a part of the routine for a long time.
2. Increasing challenge levels when appropriate – One of the best ways for competitive people to get into better shape is for them to recognize when their challenge levels are not high enough. Gradually increase the intensity of workouts as fitness levels rise. Set goals and personal challenges. By working to achieve them, the “work” part of a fitness routine can actually become a whole lot more enjoyable.
3. Finding activities that are fun – Fitness does not have to be boring to be effective. The key to making exercise an enjoyable part of the routine is finding something that is personally rewarding. Playing basketball, walking the dog, swimming, skiing and many other activities all count. Pursue activities that are enjoyable and working out will seem more like fun than actual work.
4. Mixing up the routine – There is nothing written in stone that says 10 laps around a track each and every day and lifting weights for a half hour is the only way to get into shape. To make physical activity even more enjoyable, mix things up frequently. While toning and strengthening exercises might need to stay roughly the same, there are hundreds of ways to work in cardio. Many of the options are rewarding, too. Hiking, biking and even gardening can all fit the bill.
5. Enlisting a friend – Working out is always a lot easier when someone else is along for the ride. Try group walks or runs with friends. Start an aerobics “club” in the neighborhood. Even if it is only one friend that goes along for the fitness ride, the support gained can prove invaluable.
Exercise doesn't have to be boring or grueling to be effective. There are lots of other ways to incorporate smarter workouts into the routine while making the effort personally rewarding. Finding out what works personally can pay off with an increased fitness level and a healthy habit that sticks for life.
