Working in a clothing department of a college bookstore, I spied an eight year old girl admiring herself in the full length mirror. She looks into her eyes and smiles at herself. Twirling, curtsying and giggling she is truly in love with the reflection in the mirror.
Adorable, charming, touching and disturbing, sadness washed over me. This eight year old girl was fat for her age. Yes, fat. Not pump, cuddly or fluffy. FAT. Yet, with a high level of self esteem there is tenderness in her eye and a love for the preciousness she is; she adored her refection.
Pausing for a moment to observer her gazing in the mirror and admiring her own beauty I wonder: When did I stop feeling that way about my body? When did I start believing that I was not treasured because of hefty body? What will it take to feel precious again?
What about you? So, what! You’re fat. Maybe you always have been, maybe it just crept up on you. So, What? Does that mean you are not stunning, charming, successful, or valuable?
You are all of that and more. Look into your refection; send loving, accepting and approving looks to yourself. NO, you don’t have to do it naked. However, twirls, curtseys and giggles reveal the true image of your self. You are preciousness.
