Do You Have Gym Etiquette?
If you have been following my blog you know I have worked in the field of fitness for some time now. Well over the years I have seen many things that that just make you wonder what some people are thinking. It is about having gym etiquette and realizing that there are other people who are also working out in the gym where you are.
Gym etiquette is when you obey the rules of a health club or gym and you present yourself in a respectful manner and are respectful to others and also of the equipment. Also, be aware of your surroundings and those around you.
Here are my top pet peeves in the gym that show no gym etiquette.
1- Not Putting Your Weights Away
You have just loaded the leg press up with all the weights in the gym, you do your set, and now you walk away. Leaving weights on the machines you are using is just inconsiderate. I have had many times where women will want to work on a piece of equipment but it is left with weights on it. By leaving the weights on bars, machines, or on the floor, will give the impression of it still being used. Put the weights away so others can also use it.
2- Leaving You Sweat Behind And Not Cleaning It Up
Don’t get me wrong. If you are some one who is busting your tail and sweating than way to go. You can’t control that. I have the problem with people who think it is ok to leave a small swimming pool of sweat behind and feel they don’t have to clean it up. Why would someone do this gets me. Again have some consideration for the person who is going to use it next.
3- Just Lounging On The Equipment
Today’s exercise machine has come a long way and you can get some good work on them but it doesn’t mean you can sit there forever. I know that many think that once they sit on a exercise machine that they instantly have ownership of it and it can’t be used by others until they are finished. Actually, the way they are set up is for circuit training. This means you should move from one exercise machine to another. If someone wants to work in with you then let them do a set and then go back to being lazy. Yes, some of the machines are comfortable but they are not recliners and there are no remotes with them.
4- Talking On The Cell Phone
This one is slowly climbing the list, especially when using cardio equipment. Is your life really that important that you have to hold a conversation on your cell phone in the gym. If it is not an emergency, then the conversation can wait. Doing 30 minutes on a piece of cardio equipment is hard enough without having to hear all your conversation. Leave the cell phone in the car and concentrate on your workout. Maybe more than your jaw will be tired.
5- Slamming The Weights
I have to include this one because it is just stupid. I see guys throwing dumbbells around like they own them. I guess it just makes them feel manly when they do this. Maybe the weights are to heavy for you if you can’t control it. Slamming the weights is just an attention getter that’s all it is. I lift heavy and I never slam the my weights. End of story.
That is my top five things that get the blood going at the gym. I do have a few more but we will just keep it at five for now. I can feel my blood pressure rising just by writing this so I better go workout and relieve some stress.
Do you have a certain thing that just drives you crazy at the gym? Feel free to leave a comment and vent!
Have a great workout!
