Everybody wants to live a healthy and happy life. We must eat to live. By eating well we may hope to live well. A man cannot keep his health fit by eating a lot. By eating right kind of food in right quantities we can keep our body healthy and fit .That is we need balanced diet. There are different kinds of food. Food can be divided into three main classes according to what they do to us. These are as follows:
1. There are some foods that give us heat and energy. Rice, potatoes, flour, sweet potatoes, oil, butter, ghee and sugar belong to this class.
2. There are some foods that build our body, help us grow and prevent the decay of our body. These foods are eggs, milk, fish, meat, dal, peas and beans.
3. Another class of food protects our body from diseases. Most vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, liver and fish are of this kind.
Again foods are classified according to the substance they contain. These are:
1. Fat that gives us heat and energy. It also perv nets decay. Oil, butter, ghee give us heat and energy.
2. Carbohydrate also gives us heat and energy .Rice, bread, potato, sweet potato, sugar and guru contain carbohydrate.
3. Foods containing protein can build the body.Eggs, milk, fish, meat, dal, peas and beans belong to this group. This is essential for our growth. But it should be kept in mind that our balanced diet should contain these foods in right quantities.
4. Vitamins and mineral salts keep our body fit for work and keep away diseases. Leafy vegetables, fruits, eggs etc. belong to this group.
5. Water is necessary for our body. It helps digest food, controls the heat of the body and keeps the blood healthy. If we do not drink water, we shall suffer from indigestion. Dehydration will occur causing different diseases. Besides water we can drink milk, coconut water and artificially made beverages like 7-up, fanta, pepsi, coffee, mirinda etc.
There are a number of diets and recommendations by numerous medical and govern mint institutions that are designed to promote certain aspects of health. The world health organization makes the five recommendations with respect to both population and individuals. They are-
1. Achieve an energy balance and a healthy weight.
2. Limit energy intake from total fats and shift flat consumption away from saturated fats to unsaturated fats and towards the elimination of Tran’s fatty acids.
3. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.
4. Limit the intake of simple sugar.A2003 report recommends less than 10% simple sugars.
5. Limit salt/sodium consumption from all sources and ensure that salt is iodized.
These recommendations need to be considered when preparing national policies and dietary guidelines, taking into account the local situation. Improving dietary habits is a societal not just an individual problem. Therefore it demands a population-based, multisectoral, multi-disciplinary and culturally relevant ape preach.
