The simple answer to that question is that there is no single exercise that used alone will reduce tummy fat. There is no miracle workout that you can do that will just tone stomach muscles alone. Certainly you should not be looking at tummy exercises as you will not lose tummy fat by working specifically on your abs. Don’t waste your time doing leg raises, or sit ups, or crunches and definitely don’t bother with any of those infomercial ab rocker contraptions you see advertised.
To tone your stomach you need a combination of doing full body exercises and changing your nutritional intake. Only a very small proportion of your exercises should be targeting stomach muscles, and then as part of an all round fitness program. The full body workouts will provide much more stimulus to the metabolic and hormonal changes you need to make in your body.
The type of exercises you need to do are sprinting, squats, mountain climbers, lunges, presses and pulls, and snatches. Workouts with these elements will indirectly help your stomach toning even though the tummy is not a specific target.
Although a good all round exercise program is important, probably more important than particular exercises to lose stomach fat is your food intake. You must address what you are eating because if your diet is full of junk, then your abs will be covered with ugly fat.
You need to change your diet so that as much of your food as possible is as close to its natural state as it can be. Get as many unprocessed natural whole foods as you can into your diet. If this means fundamental changes to the things you normally eat then you will probably need some help with this. There are plenty of healthy eating programs available which will help you get the right foods into your body but still make meal times interesting.
You will find it very difficult to stick with any major changes to your diet if the food you are eating is boring. With the right help you can make those changes you need but still keep plenty of variety in the things you eat. Look for a program that is relatively simple, if you have to count calories or the like, you’re less likely to stick with it. And be sure that some of those treats you just can’t give up can be included somewhere (my favourite diet plan has a recipe for chocolate fudge included!).
So what is the best way to reduce your tummy? You need a combined full body exercise program with sound and practical nutritional changes. And most of all whatever way you choose you have to stick with it, you won’t tone your stomach in a few days.
