According to Simeons, when taking HCG and following the Very Low Calorie Diet (see his manuscript for more detail), the HCG allows your body to tap into your abnormal fat reserves, which are typically inaccessible. These abnormal fat reserves include your belly, upper arms, and buttocks. Unlike most weight loss programs, the HCG Diet Protocol helps to address those areas that are usually the hardest to minimize.

Here goes. Back in the 1950’s Dr. Simeons discovered that there are three main kinds of fat in your body. Let’s talk about each of them. One is structural fat. This is one of the good fats that your body needs. Life would be painful and ugly without it. For example, structural fat around your joints keep the joints comfortable, and there is a layer of structural fat in your face that helps maintain its softness and the look of your face. If structural fat is lost, your joints would hurt and your face would be harsh and bony. You would look like a skeleton. Ladies, we all want thin, but not quite that thin. Am I right? So that’s the first kind of fat – structural. Let’s leave that fat securely in place, shall we?
The next type of fat is normal reserve, which is your energy reserve and is also a type of good fat. Simeons compared this reserve of fat to the money you keep in your regular bill-paying checking account. You know…fat goes in…fat comes out on an as-needed basis. If your body needs a little extra energy this is where it will go for the extra burn. Or, if you eat a little too much and your body thinks ‘Well, I am good for now, but I might need a little extra energy tomorrow’, this is where the extra energy or fat goes for temporary holding. Normal reserve fat is easily available for your body when you need a burst of energy or extra endurance i.e. a marathon run. On most diets, this is the type of fat that is lost first.
We’ve all done diets where you lose a few pounds really fast. Those pounds are the normal reserve fat we just described. However, this loss usually comes to a screeching halt; you plateau and it seems like you can’t lose anymore. Women usually quickly lose fat in the chest instead of in their legs, upper arms, butt, etc. and men lose it in their legs and butt instead of in their beer gut, love handles, etc.
That’s because most of the belly fat, the fat in the butt, or those lovely waving flaps on the upper arms is what Simeons described as the (sometimes present) third type of fat in your body: inaccessible or abnormal fat, which is not considered good or healthy fat. And, it practically takes an act of Congress for your body to even recognize it, let alone start burning this abnormal fat. Until you find a way to get your body to release and burn it, you will suffer needlessly and have little hope of successful, much less comfortable, weight loss.
Enter the HCG Diet Protocol. Simeons discovered that abnormal fat is not simply the result of eating too much and/or not exercising enough. Surprised? We weren’t! According to Simeons, the problem with abnormal fat starts with a little center in your brain called the hypothalamus. Now don’t worry. There is not a test at the end of this, but the short explanation is as follows.
According to Simeons, the hypothalamus influences your base metabolism and acts as a gatekeeper for fat usage/storage but sometimes, or often, things get a bit out of whack. If your hypothalamus is out of whack, it may send improper signals regarding when you are full, when to burn fat, and when to lock fat away into your inaccessible fat reserves.
To sum it all up, according to Simeons, the HCG and Very Low Calorie Diet combination allows your body to release and burn your abnormal fat along with all the nutrients, calories, proteins, etc. that the fat contains into the bloodstream, which in turn satisfies your hunger. Simeons also noted that following the plan with the healthy, specified foods for the minimum 21 days potentially allows your hypothalamus to rest and reset creating a lasting change in the way your body handles incoming fat and nutrients, i.e. improving your base metabolism in some cases and resetting the base metabolism in others – this is the good stuff that no other diet proposes.
A Sneak Peek Into a “Round” of the HCG Diet Protocol
Day 1 and 2: The Gorge (First 2 Days on HCG)
Take HCG and gorge. Meaning you get as much fatty food down as you can without making yourself sick. Simeons emphasized that these days should be spent eating as much fattening food as possible to restore structural fat and avoid hunger at start up.
Day 3 to 26-43: Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Phase and then “HCG Exit Days”
Take HCG and follow the Very Low Calorie Diet, VLCD, for at least 21 days, but no more than 38 days. During this phase, you will eat from a very specific list of foods, but don’t let that scare you. The foods and drinks allowed are foods you can find at your grocery store: coffee, tea, water, chicken, beef, white fish, shrimp, steak, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, apples, tomatoes, grapefruit, strawberries, and more!
HCG Exit Days: Once you have done at least 21 days, but no more than 38 days of HCG with the VLCD, you will stop taking HCG, BUT you will continue to follow the VLCD for 72 hours while the HCG is exiting your system. If you do not follow the VLCD for three days after you stop taking HCG, you will gain weight.
Maintenance:
Here’s the kicker – the place where so many diet plans ultimately fail. Once you are done with your three days of the VLCD with no HCG, then you move into maintenance, which consists of a minimum of two 3 week periods.
1st 3 Weeks After Stopping HCG: Eat anything you like, except sugars and starches, and do a Steak Day* on any day that your morning weight is 2.1 pounds or more over your last HCG date weight.
2nd 3 Weeks After Stopping HCG: SLOWLY start adding back healthy sugars and starches and do a Steak Day* on any day that your morning weight is 2.1 pounds or more
over your last HCG date weight.
*“Steak Day”: eat nothing for breakfast or lunch, but drink plenty of water throughout the day. Then, in the evening, have 1 large steak followed by an apple OR a raw tomato. This should put you back in your HCG date weight range.
Moving on With Life as the New, Slimmer You
This is when you move on with your new, healthy lifestyle with a smaller size and bigger attitude. You get to eat like a normal, healthy person. After all, you are actually craving healthier foods and feeling quite energized. To control weight for the rest of your life, you just weigh daily.
