You probably drink coffee numerous times a day for the caffeine kick and energy boost. But if you’re a man, you could be getting an additional benefit of coffee you never knew about. By now, you have probably heard of numerous studies that reveal the benefits of coffee. From supporting heart health to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, helping to control movements in Parkinson’s disease patients, warding off liver disease, aiding in weight loss, and providing antioxidants, coffee is really an all-around health booster beverage.
Well, coffee drinkers, rejoice once more, as a new study reported that drinking two cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
The study looked at over 550,000 men worldwide and found that the risk of prostate cancer was reduced by 2.5 percent with every two cups added in a day. The researchers looked at the results from 13 studies that examined the link between coffee consumption and prostate cancer risk. Overall, coffee drinkers had a 24 percent lower risk of death by diagnosed prostate cancer, compared to nondrinkers.
The researchers speculate that coffee contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been shown to reduce cancer growth.
Although coffee has been tied to numerous health benefits, it’s important to note that it is also associated with some risks. Caffeine is a stimulant, and having too much of it can lead to side effects, including shakiness, heart palpitations, eye twitches, and headaches. Furthermore, caffeine withdrawal can yield in even worse side effects.
Caffeine use has been associated with symptoms of anxiety and even depression, so be wary of how many cups you’re drinking in a day.
Furthermore, although coffee can offer health benefits, how you take it can rob you of those same benefits. You see, coffee in its black form is high in antioxidants and can be beneficial. Once you start adding milk, creamers, and sugars, though, you begin to lose those health benefits and instead consume unwanted fat, which can exacerbate health outcomes.
If you do need to sweeten up your coffee, opt for a natural sweetener, and don’t drown your coffee in milk and creamers as those can add on the pounds instead of helping you lose them.
Coffee can be a health beverage in its own right, but listen to your body to know what your limit is. Also, avoid caffeine before bed as it can disrupt your sleep cycle. A safe rule of thumb is to stop consumption after five o’clock in the afternoon.
Coffee compounds could help prevent type 2 diabetes
Researchers have found that consuming two to three cups of coffee a day could help prevent type 2 diabetes. A new study identified two compounds that provide coffee with this benefit. Researchers are hopeful that the findings may help develop future medications, as well as prevention methods, for type 2 diabetes. Continue reading…
