Consider a pre-wedding scenario. The couple can often be seen working extra hard to look perfect on their special day. Working out, eating right, dieting are all part of the build-up to the wedding. Brides have been known to crash diet for weeks before the big day, so that they can lose weight and look slim on their wedding day. And now consider the wedding itself and the immediate aftermath of it. Excellent (and by that we mean calorie-laden, delicious) food, a gathering of friends, and you – at the centre of the universe.
In such a situation, it is but natural that couples put on weight after marriage. The diets are forgotten in a rush of family love, the exercise regimen has been sacrificed at the altar of the honeymoon, and there are family dinners, where everyone who’s ever known you has invited the happy couple for a meal. But it is not all bad. It is possible to keep your weight down even immediately after marriage.
The trick is to expect this to happen. Forewarned is forearmed. So, if you know this is coming, you can plan accordingly. The first and most important aspect of this is to schedule your exercise regimen into your busy days. If you exercise at home, make sure you’ve made time for it (preferably early in the morning). If the gym’s your thing, make sure you’re enrolled at one near where you’ll be living after you’re married. For best results, schedule it together. When both of you will work out together, the slacker (and there always is one) will be motivated to keep up the regimen.
Eat moderately. We know the problems: the food is awesome, the wine list enticing and all your friends are here. And you must let go a little bit. After all, it is the biggest occasion of your life! But while you’re indulging in this, don’t snack outside of meals, drink lots of water, and once again, do it together. Be there for each other by taking care that your partner isn’t sliding down the slippery slope. Don’t nag (that can’t be fun just around the wedding), but a polite nudge here and there wont hurt.
