Home made wind mills can save you a large amount of money. I know from personal experience that you can achieve power independence if you work at it. About a year ago I set out of my quest to be off the grid. I have built my own wind mill and then solar panels, it took quite a bit of work but now that I have the electric company sending me checks it a pretty good feeling. But realistically if you set out today, within a month you could cut your energy cost by near 80%. You can build your own wind mill for under $150. And solar panels for about the same depending on there you get the materials from.
Lets start with what exactly a wind mill is, they are small mechanical machines which turn when wind is applied to the blades. While the blades are turning, they are also turning the motor inside which produces the energy. The cool thing is that once its set up, there is no maintenance, or upkeep that you have to do on a system like this. Also there is no operation cost. The wind powers everything, all you do is sit back and collect the electricity. Depending on where you live, the amount of electricity that you are able to produce will vary. Some locations produce large amount of wind, and therefore the output will be much higher then in a area which has minimal wind.
The same goes for people looking into solar power, if you live in an area that has more cloudy days then sunny you will produce less electricity then lets say someone who lives in Arizona. But the only way to find out is to test.
Now I know you are asking, how can I get started on having a home made wind mill. Well there is a simple answer. You need to find a guide which will take you through the process. Its not a very complicated process but having a guide will help you tremendously. From my experience I would say that building the wind mill was easier then building my solar panels, but compared to other things that I have done they were both relativity easy.
So lets go over what you need.
- A guide, these are readily available on the net
- Some simple tools and a clean work place
- Make sure the guide is tested, and easy to follow, some guides are complicated and end up taking to much of your time and money
Determination and focus will also be helpful because these projects do take time, and you can easily get distracted.
