Ayurvedic medicine is a centuries old healing system from the Far East that not only helps cure numerous ills in many patients, but can also be used as an effective fat fighter to help you lose unwanted pounds.
“Today, I am helping you fight fat in a way we have never done before on this show,” says Dr. Oz as he introduces to viewers the ancient healing practice of Ayurvedic medicine. With Dr. Oz is special guest Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary, a neurologist and Ayurvedic medicine practioner who has been using Ayurvedic medicine to help patients fight fat.
“I don’t believe in conventional methods of losing weight like using diet products and counting calories. In Ayurveda, being overweight is due to problems with digestion. I believe that a strong digestive fire is the most important thing to lose weight,” says Dr. Kulreet as she explains that when your body is not digesting food properly, that it causes a buildup of toxins in your body that then causes fat to deposit in areas around you middle, your thighs and your hips. With Ayurvedic medicine, the toxins are removed and then your metabolism increases and the fat melts off.
These toxins Dr. Kulreet talks about are referred to as “Ama” in Ayurvedic medicine. She tells viewers that there are two types of toxins: water soluble toxins that a person can rid their body of through regular diet and exercise; and, lipid soluble toxins that get stuck inside fat cells and are the cause of making fat so difficult to get rid of.
According to Dr. Kulreet, the good news is that it is possible to rid your fat cells of Ama through Ayurvedic medicine and that she has seen her patients lose weight through Ayurvedic medicine ranging from a decrease in just a few dress sizes to a total weight loss of up to 80 pounds!
To help viewers lose weight through Ayurvedic medicinal methods that can be done at home, Dr. Kulreet offers the following 4 weight loss methods that she says will work wonders for your weight loss success.
Ayurvedic fat fighter #1: Ayurvedic tea
To make an Ayurvedic tea add ½ teaspoon each of coriander seeds, cumin seeds and fennel seeds to about 4-5 cups of boiling water. Then, after the seeds have steeped briefly, strain the seeds out and pour the tea into a thermal mug to keep it hot while sipping throughout the day. Dr. Kulreet explains that it is key to have the tea hot as it helps the ingredients work in your body.
“This is my Ayurvedic fat fighting tea—I love this tea, I make it three times a week myself,” says Dr. Kulreet. “It opens up channels in your body so that this Ama, this fat, can pass through your body.”
Ayurvedic fat fighter #2: Add homemade Curry powder to your meals
Dr. Kulreet states that the American diet typically focuses on only three tastes: sweet, sour and salt. However, 3 of the tastes that people are missing in their American diet that is important for weight loss are the tastes of pungent, astringent and bitter.
“Those tastes are important to have in your meals to have you feel satiated, to feel full and to aid your digestion,” says Dr. Kulreet.
She tells viewers that to get all six tastes in their meals that people should add Curry powder to their food. However, not the store-bought kind on shelves, which she says are typically full of chilies. Rather, you should make your own Ayurvedic-style Curry powder at home with the following recipe:
• 5 teaspoons of coriander seeds
• 1 teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds
• 1 large Bay leaf
• ½ teaspoon of cumin seeds
• ½ teaspoon black mustard seeds
• 1 and ½ inches of cinnamon stick
• 5 cloves
• 2 teaspoons of Turmeric powder
Take the first 7 ingredients and blend them in a coffee grinder, after which you can then add the 2 teaspoons of Turmeric powder. Then, add this blend of Ayurvedic herbs to your meals for your seasoning.
