Summer is here, and for many people that means taking a nice vacation. Don’t use vacation as an excuse to skip your workout! Because you usually have more time and are less stressed than you are at home, vacation can actually be a great time to try some new activities and exercises. Also, because many people tend to eat more on vacation, you definitely don’t want to pass on that workout. It may take a little creativity, but it will definitely be worth it! Here are some suggestions for staying fit while traveling.
#1. If you are staying in a hotel, check out their workout facility. Many have cardio equipment as well as free weights, and some even have a full health club that you can use for a small fee. Or, use the hotel pool. Swimming is a great non-impact cardio exercise.
#2. If you have a gym membership, check with them to see if they have a club near where you will be staying. If they don’t, they may have an arrangement with another club that will allow you to use their facilities. I know that YMCAs across the United States will honor your Y membership. Again, because you have more time, this is a great opportunity to try out some of those classes you have been curious about!
#3. Use your surroundings and incorporate them into your workout. If you are at the beach, try running on the sand or doing squats and lunges in the sand. Fill a sand pail with water and use it for upper body exercises. If you are in the mountains, hiking is a great activity to get your heart rate going and work the lower body. Or rent a mountain bike and take in the scenery that way while you exercise. In the city or country, use a park bench for triceps dips and squats. Put a little imagination into it and the possibilities are endless!
#4. Make your own fitness kit. Some things you might include are a pair of running shoes, a jump rope, and your favorite workout video or DVD. All of these will fit easily into your suitcase, and you can use them anywhere. Pack a resistance band and try this great workout.
Keeping up with your fitness routine while on vacation will give your more energy and make you feel great. It will also make things easier when you get home. If you ever interrupt your workouts, it’s not hard to get back to it when vacation is over!
