So, I now realised that I could go on to any diet or healthy eating plan but that was only one part of the journey to success. I had to find a way of controlling my feelings as otherwise I was doomed to a lifetime of failure.
Have you ever asked yourself why slim people seem to be able to eat whatever they like and never gain weight. Well we all know at least one of these people, may be a friend, colleague or relative but whenever you are with them they seem to eat well and have treats but always remain slim and healthy.
We tell ourselves that it is so unfair, why doesn't my metabolism work that fast so that I can eat and drink everything I like and stay slim. The answer is simple - they control their feelings towards food and that leads to controlling the amount they eat, so when you see them snacking on crisps, chocolate etc they only have small amounts or one bag of crisps or one chocolate bar.
When I eat a large lunch and then go home and eat a large evening meal, they will go home and eat a small plate of food to compensate for the large lunch.
In summary, they have a good attitude to food, and this quite simply is the way their mind is programmed.
Caroline and the part she played in me finding the answer
I have a very good friend Caroline, we worked at the same company for 5 years and we continued the friendship after we both left. Now Caroline is about a size 8 and looks great. She always prepared her own lunch and brought it to work and it was always well balanced. But Caroline also ate treats like chocolate and crisps, a few sweets here and there. If it was someone's birthday she would have a piece of cake and being a large company there was normally at least one birthday a week. She would talk about going out for meals with friends and her partner.
So why was she so slim and healthy looking.
Now, I always eat breakfast and at the time of working with her I was yo-yo dieting and had not embarked on my 49 pound / 22 kilo weight loss journey. My breakfast was a bowl of muesli with semi-skimmed milk so fairly healthy.
However, lunch was always on the hoof and at various times of the day. At the time I believed it was reasonably healthy and of the right quantity - however, now I know much better.
My evening meal would always be large - and why shouldn't it be. I had worked hard all day and deserved it. The chunk of cheese I ate straight from the fridge as soon as I got home was fine as it wasn't part of my evening meal so therefore didn't count and the very large glass of wine was essential to calming me down - it had been a very stressful day!!
Getting the picture - my mind was controlling my eating habits - I had a bad attitude towards food.
