"Leptin and ghrelin work together to control when you feel hungry or full," says Michael Breus, PhD, who works at the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine and director of The Sleep Disorders Centers of Southeastern Lung Care in Atlanta. Ghrelin, which is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates appetite, while leptin, produced in fat cells, sends a signal to the brain when you are full.
If you don't get enough sleep at night then it will drive your leptin levels down, in turn you have less satisfaction after you eat. The lack of sleep causes ghrelin levels to rise as well, and then your appetite becomes stimulated, making you want to eat more when you wouldn't even be hungry, or keep eating after you would normally be full. This will cause overeating and cause weight gain.
A study was done and it showed that the desire for high calorie foods and high carbohydrate foods was increased by 45%! Also their appetite was increased as well. The men with the least amount of sleep a night weighed the most. This proved that sleep and weight gain go hand in hand.
