In my research on health and nutrition there is nothing that upset me more than when I found out that the food industry has been intentionally manufacturing products that contain an additive that is not only addictive but fattening as well. That sinister ingredient is MSG and it's present in almost every kind of food we eat!
I take my hat off to John Erb, once a research assistant at the University of Ontario and author of the book, "The Slow Poisoning of America". He is one of the many people who exposed the dirty secret about MSG use. This controversial issue has been around for some time but the food industry has been keeping mum about it as it is what makes the products move, and move fast.
MSG is present in just about everything we consume everyday from processed, canned, frozen or boxed foods and even restaurant and fast food meals. Even more surprising is that even vitamin supplements contain MSG. Manufacturers are able to get away with it most of the time by tricking us with the labeling.
MSG goes by many aliases but poison by any other name is just as toxic. Here's a listing:
- Monosodium glutamate, monopotassium glutamate, glutamic acid
- Anything that says hydrolyzed (such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein)
- Anything that says Autolized
- Anything that says natural flavor, or flavors, natural flavoring, flavorings
- Corn syrup, corn starch, dextrose
- Soy protein, wheat protein, whey protein, anything fortified protein
- Seasonings
- Citric acid
- Calcium caseinate
- Sodium caseinate
- Yeast extract
- Gelatin
- Carrageenan
- Textured protein
- Enzymes
- Bouillon, pork, chicken, beef
- Barley malt, malt extract, maltodextrin
- Soy sauce
You may be wondering, why so many names? According to the FDA, if MSG is used in a product, it has to be labeled with its common name.
Thus if you use hydrolyzed vegetable protein which contains MSG, you have to use the name of the ingredient itself and not any of its components. The food industry has used this loophole to its full advantage in camouflaging the word MSG in food labels.
In the past 30 years, studies on rats have consistently shown that MSG causes these animals to become fat. In nature, rats are not fat thus their weight gain had to be artificially induced. Studies show that rats fed with MSG had an increase in appetite to up to 40%.
This is how it works. In your tongue are receptors that detect protein, fats, carbohydrates, and sugars. These same receptors also determine if there is actual food inside your mouth. What the food industry does is use MSG to trick the taste receptors into thinking that it is about to receive any of the substances it usually detects. When this happens your pancreas starts releasing insulin and within thirty minutes your blood sugar drops causing you to feel hungry and ready to eat again. You then eat more food with MSG and the cycle starts all anew. Oh, and by the way, even your diet foods are not spared, most of them are also loaded with MSG.
As if that wasn't enough, here's something more to think about. With vitamin manufacturers adding MSG to their products, we can never be sure that weight loss pills and prescription drugs are free from it. In our opinion, the chances are very high that there's some form of MSG in these as well.
When it comes to weight and health issues, education is all important. Half of your problem is solved if you are armed with the right information. After I found out all these things out about MSG, my husband and I started eating organic and gave up on MSG completely. So far I have lost 20 pounds and I feel wonderful. The upside is that there are high quality products that do not contain MSG and other harmful substances such as pesticides. These products are certainly worth looking into as they will help you ensure your family's health.
