The first secret to getting a flat stomach is NOT to do a ton of crunches and other stomach exercises. You will do these exercises if you want to get a toned stomach, but your first order of business should be to get rid of all of the fat stored in your belly region. This means two things. You absolutely must change the way you eat. This is the first and most important rule to getting the stomach you have always wanted.
Poor eating habits lead to habitual weight gain. By cutting your caloric intake you will force your body to burn the fat stored on it. One of the places where our bodies love to store excess fat is on our stomachs. Therefore the first thing you should do is to draft an eating plan. Do not just think about it. Literally write it down somewhere. We are much more likely to follow through with our goals if we put them on paper. Also putting a diet plan on paper and keeping it somewhere in plain sight, on the refrigerator for instance, will serve as a constant reminder of what you should and should not be eating. There are numerous diet plans out there all claiming to be the latest and greatest thing. If you want to check them out by all means do so, but whatever plan you choose stick with it!
If you do not want to bother with finding a diet plan then here is what you can do. First determine the number of calories you should eat per day for your current body condition. There are plenty of online calculators to assist you with this. After you know your caloric intake needs you should make sure that the number of calories you eat per day is far less than what your body requires. This will make your body eat up the fat stored on it to meet all of its energy requirements. The food you eat should be low in sugar and low in fat calories.
The second key to getting a flat stomach is to do cardio exercise. Cardio exercise combined with a good diet plan will burn calories and make you body use up all that nasty fat stored on your stomach faster than you could possibly imagine. Try to do at least 20 minutes of cardio 5 days a week. If are not breaking a sweat during your cardio sessions then you are not working hard enough.
After a couple weeks of dieting and cardio exercise start to throw in those crunches I mentioned above and do some basic strength training like pushups and lunges. Do not forget to stretch after every set of crunches you do. By stretching the stomach muscles you will develop lean sexy abs and encourage your stomach to stay flat. If you do not do this your stomach muscles will kind of pop-out making your belly look bigger.
