Ephedra is a common diet supplement that everybody is talking about. It is derived from Ephedrine, a salt of an alkaloid and is very soluble in water. This also acts as a nerve stimulant which resembles adrenaline, ephedrine (or Ma-huang) and has been used for more than 2,000 years to treat bronchial asthma cold and flu, lack of perspiration, chills, headache, nasal congestion, cough and wheezing, aching joints and bones and edema.
Such herb is not specific to the East and as a matter of fact the herb was widely used in the West as well. As days go by, more people learned the powerful effects of the drug. In fact, some Mormons purportedly adopted Ephedrine into their diets and now make something called Mormon tea. A different name for the tea is Whorehouse tea.
Ephedra has been used for more than 4000 years ephedra in Chinese medicine to treat several disorders. It comes from a plant that has a few powerful active components and ephedrine is the most useful. Studies have been proven that ephedra increases our metabolism and it promotes weight loss, relaxes the air passages in the lungs to help cure asthma and cough. It also promotes perspiration to help a person recover from a minor cold and helps promote urination to help relieve edema.
Ephedra has been extensively researched for its thermogenic (fat burning) properties. Studies would show that ephedra helps promote the loss of unwanted fats while helping spare lean muscle tissue, a highly sought-after property that prescription diet medications still haven't been able to reproduce.
Due to its stimulating effect on our nervous system, ephedra could be found in some well known weight loss and energy products. For the health buffs, it suppresses the appetite and stimulates the thyroid gland, which then stimulates metabolism. It has been the subject of scientific research for obesity these days since due to its use of its thermogenic fat-burning effect on dietary intake. It is also incorporated in "energy" products that could give athletes extra energy without having to rain their reserves. Similar to the diet formulas, it is often mixed with ingredients such as kola nut or guarana, which has caffeine as its content.
It has been proven and tested that the way we lose weight is to burn more calories than we consume. Ephedra helps in such method by producing a thermogenic effect, which causes one to burn more calories. Also, it appears that by taking Ephedra people seem to eat less and have more energy and could become more active. Whether one also needs to consciously lower their caloric intake and/or exercise depends on a variety of circumstances, which is best discussed with your trusted doctor.
According to the Ephedra, "More than 15 million consumers a year benefit from Ephedra, with only a minute fraction reporting problems to the FDA. Any risk of unbefitting use must be balanced in opposition to the health benefits accruing to millions of Americans. The nation's obesity scourge creates a personal and public essential for weight control, and 98 million Americans must not be deprived of an option for improving their health without conclusive scientific evidence."
