Looking Back
Ronald McDonald House Charities began its mission to improve children's lives more than 30 years ago. The organization celebrated the opening of its very first Ronald McDonald House in 1974 in Philadelphia. The nonprofit didn't become officially established in honor of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, however, until 1984. By 1985, the nonprofit had already introduced itself to the work by opening a total of 88 Ronald McDonald Houses in a number of locations.
Today, the multifaceted children's charity has a presence in more than 52 countries and regions throughout the world. It has given out millions of dollars in scholarships and has served almost as many families as the famous burger chain it was created in honor of.
The Ronald McDonald Houses
This is perhaps the most recognizable effort put forth by Ronald McDonald House Charities. The individual houses are established in cities throughout the world where children's hospitals are located. The houses serve as a place for families to go while their seriously ill or injured children receive specialized treatment. The houses offer families home-cooked meals, private bedrooms and playrooms for children. A variety of other services may also be provided for sick children and their families. These include special suites for youngsters with suppressed immune systems, educational programs, sibling support and more. The idea behind this branch of the charity is to give families in need an affordable place to stay together while a sick youngster receives vital treatment.
The Ronald McDonald Family Room
This branch of the charity is responsible for building respite rooms within hospitals for families to escape to and get away from it all. The services found within the rooms include such things as kitchen areas, sleeping rooms, shower facilities, Internet access, laundry facilities and more.
The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile
This program is designed to bring health and dental care to children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford it. Mobile units owned by the program visit communities to bring primary care, dental care, diagnostic assistance and other medical services to the people who need these things the most. The mobile vehicles in this fleet are 40 feet in length and are staffed by pediatric specialist volunteers.
Most of the services provided by Ronald McDonald House are free of charge to those who need them. Stays in Ronald McDonald Houses, however, might involve a small fee if a family can afford to pay for it. If they can't, charges are waived completely. The mobile units do not charge for medical care, but will seek reimbursement from third-party insurers if insurance is available.
Ronald McDonald House Charities Inc. operates on the premise that changing a child's life can improve a family, a community and even the world.
