Diet pills and supplements containing the Hoodia Gordini have been making the waves lately as a 21st century miracle weight loss solution. The Hoodia Gordini is a succulent plant in the cactus family that grows abundantly in the Kalahari deserts of the African continent. But despite its media exposure there are no official clinical trials to confirm its weight loss efficacy.
History Of Hoodia
It was in 1937 that the anthropologists observed that local Bushmen tribes thriving in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa eat the Hoodia Gordini stems to suppress hunger when traveling long journeys which is not uncommon in the desert. In 1997, lab studies done by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of South Africa affirmed that the p57 component in the plant exhibited appetite suppression in lab animals while showing non-toxicity levels in the dosages administered.
Since this discovery appearing in major news and featured on "60 Minutes" and "the Today Show" on national TV, it wasn't long before the multi-billion weight loss industry started to offer products with the Hoodia extract as the wonder weight loss cure for the more than 60% of overweight Americans.
How It Works
Studies into the p57 chemical's action revealed that it can stimulate neurotransmitters to let the brain think that you are satiated and therefore suppress appetite. Researches concluded that the p57 acts to mimic the same chemical action in the brain triggered when blood sugars rise as you eat and eventually feel full because these blood sugar or glucose rise are detected by the brain to let you know you are full. With Hoodia ingested, the p57 mimic this action and tricks the brain into thinking you are full.
The main compulsion to taking Hoodia diet pills is to eat less every meal time. Allowing the ingested capsule to work means taking it at least 45 to 50 minutes before eating. Some products may advertise that its Hoodia content works immediately but to be sure, allow some time before starting your meal. Its efficacy should become evident when you find yourself eating fewer portions of the same meals you are used to. Bear in mind that this efficacy can be neutralized if you continue to eat a lot.
Things To Consider
Nothing beats a good exercise regimen. While the Hoodia ingredient can help you eat less and thus reduce fat intake, you still have to worry about the fat deposited in your body. Leading an active lifestyle with a reasonably rigorous exercise routine every day should burn those stored fats without having to worry that eating will just add to it. Hoodia will help in that area.
The FDA has yet to evaluate Hoodia for safety and effectiveness. But that may not be forthcoming as the FDA is not mandated to do that with food supplements, only with drugs. For this reason, you still owe it to yourself to consult with your doctor, dietician or pharmacist before taking one, especially if pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of allergies to natural and artificial substances, or are taking any prescriptive drugs to treat any existing health problem.
