Every year it seems we make New Year's resolutions just to give up in a month or so. It is too hard, we lose interest or we set unrealistic goals. One key to making and keeping your weight loss resolution is to make it easier on yourself. Instead of expecting to see a totally new you in a month or so, set goals for the year that are easier to achieve.
Keep Yourself Motivated
The extra weight that you have gained did not appear overnight. It is not realistic to expect it to disappear in a matter of only a few weeks. However, you can see results in a short period of time that will motivate you to stick to the diet and lose the weight you need to lose. Not only will you benefit from the weight loss as a way of feeling better about yourself, but you will be healthier without the extra weight.
One approach to help keep you motivated to lose the weight you need to lose is positive reinforcement. How can you do this? Coming up with some really unique ideas to help you through this process can allow your goals to be a success.
First of all, make sure you are eating and drinking the right food and beverages that will allow you to lose weight. Drink water. This is one of the keys to losing weight. All the extra calories you get from soda and high-sugar content drinks can easily add up to the total amount of calories you should have all day!
Give yourself a pep talk every so often. It does not have to be every day, but once a week will work. Tell yourself what a great job you are doing and how you are getting much closer to your goal.
Tape notes to the healthy foods you are choosing such as "Great choice" or "You are doing great" and this will help to keep you motivated.
Realize that you are not going to totally change the way you eat overnight. If you slip up and eat something that you know you should not, do not linger over how much of a mistake you made.
Yes, you messed up, but that does not mean the whole resolution is a failure. Get back on track and go back to the low fat foods you know are healthier. Move on. This is one of the keys to success.
Often, a picture of you at a more ideal weight can be a great motivator. Place this somewhere you will see it every day and make it a goal that you have set for yourself. By seeing what is possible if you just stick to your resolution, you will have more of a desire to get back to that weight. This is much easier than remembering that you used to be smaller.
If there is no smaller picture of yourself consider closing your eyes for 5 minutes a day and visualize yourself as the size you would like to be. Take note of how you feel during the visualization of a different you and focus on those emotions.
Slow and steady gets more results than fad or crash diets and will allow you to stay healthy as you are losing the extra weight. Do not set yourself up for failure. Instead, enjoy the fact that you are doing what is needed to get yourself back to a healthier, slimmer you.
Always consult your doctor before starting any new diet, product or exercise routine.
