To lose weight successfully is just a simple mathematical calculation. As long as you consume fewer calories than you used up for energy, you will gradually lose weight, right? In other words, all you need to do is go on a calorie deficit diet and you will naturally lose weight, isn't it?
If you agree to the above questions, then I have one more question to ask you. If the questions in the first paragraph are true, then why is it that so many people, probably including yourself are not successful at losing weight with calorie deficit diets?
I bet that question will have most of you scratching your head for an answer and I am going to give it to you here. You see, when you go on a diet, especially a drastically calorie deficit diet that leaves you hungry, your body naturally will go into a state of "famine mode".
This is because the body naturally wants to protect you from the "famine" to keep you alive. In this mode, your body is under stress and produces more of the fat storing hormone called cortisol.
Over and above that, your body now burns more of your muscle mass for energy instead of body fat. When that happens, your metabolism plummets and your fat burning capabilities are further compromised.
Even if you have lost some weight, you would have probably lost more muscles than body fat and that is a situation you do not want to be in because the less muscle you have, the lower your metabolism will be. The lower your metabolic rate, the more fat your body will accumulate and this is the primary reason why when people lost weight through diets, they will put back the weight they have lost and sometimes even more than they were before once they are off the diet.
So what should you do to lose weight successfully? The answer to that is to develop a good eating habit so that you will never go hungry and at the same time, have an exercise program to burn off even more calories and also to raise your metabolic rate.
Hunger is the way your body signals to you that you need food and it is this hunger that triggers your body to store body fat and burn your muscle for energy instead. So by all means, go on a caloric deficit diet, but eat 5 to 6 small meals a day so that you do not trigger off the hunger mechanism.
Furthermore, since there will be food in your digestive system all day long, you will also burn more calories simply because the digestive system is working efficiently all the time and that requires the use of energy. This will also prevent your metabolism from grinding to a halt.
Next, get on an exercise program to prevent muscle loss and burn more calories at the same time. Even better, start a muscle building program because the more muscle you gain, the higher your metabolic rate will become. On top of that, the calories you consumed will be channeled to feed and repair your muscles so that any excessive calories are being used up to feed your muscles instead of being stored as body fat.
If you want to lose weight successfully, that is all there is to it. There is no secret to burning off your fat after all, except your common sense and your determination to succeed at it.
