Sticking to a healthy food diet can be tough and seem like a prison sentence and having the discipline to eat portions just large enough to keep you satisfied challenges your resolve at every meal or restaurant dinner.
If you find yourself thinking weight loss is just too hard and you're in danger of slipping back into your old eating habits and piling back on the pounds then before you give up here's some help.
I have two principles I share with my weight loss clients that help; don't make weight loss too hard, and do get back to enjoying and savoring your food like your ancestors did.
I'll explain these philosophies in more detail below.
"Weight Loss is Just Too Hard":
Understanding what is going on when you say to yourself "
weight loss is just too hard" may help your perspective and facilitate you getting back into the weight loss
saddle.
First, realize you're having a tantrum and it's this child in you telling you its too hard! You remember that child, right? If you have, or had kids, you recognize the whining when they're asked to do something they don't want to do - "
It's just too hard." The truth is you did it to your parents when you were young.
And what did you do as a parent or your parents do when this excuse came up?
Well, I know my parents used words like "
well, get with the program" or "
toughen up princess" and a bunch of similar sayings that at the time I thought lacked sympathy of my unique situation. Fact is they recognized my whining for what it was -
a lame excuse. And you need to do the same - it's an excuse.
But let's be realistic as well, weight loss for most of us isn't a "
walk in the park." It does require sticking to a program, and even more importantly going the distance. But it doesn't mean you won't be tempted to make a detour a few times and wander off track. And so let's stack the odds in your favor.
Stacking the Odds in Your Favor:
Choose a healthy diet that is based on foods you like - sorry chocolate and ice cream is a diet but not a healthy one. But there are plenty of low carbs and high protein diet plans that are delicious and don't require purchasing overpriced meals from a diet company or eating supplements from the roots of Amazon rain forest plants!
Do your homework and choose healthy foods you can feel satisfied eating and provide you the nutrition your body needs for getting through the day. That is after all the primary reason why we eat - to nourish our body for living each day. It's not really anything more complicated. It took some searching and experimenting before I found the diet that worked for me.
The second piece of the puzzle revolves around portion control. We've all got used to restaurant sized meals but you don't need to eat until you're full. Eat until you're
satisfied but more importantly,
eat slowly. Take a bite and then put knife and fork down, and chew on the food, taking in the flavor before swallowing.
This is good for a few reasons.
The most obvious is if you're going to eat then why not enjoy the taste of the food? You can't really do that eating at 100 mph! The second, but more critical reason is, it takes awhile for your stomach to send the message to the brain you've had enough and to
stop eating. Eating slowly allows the message to get through so you stop at feeling satisfied but not full. Eating fast means the message is received too late when you're already full and sometimes even uncomfortably stuffed!
Portion control can be difficult for many people and is causing obesity at an alarming level. Because it can be health-threatening for people it has led to weight loss surgery as a solution, and in particular gastric band and bypass surgery, where effectively your stomach is shrunk in size to reduce the size of portions you can eat.
Recently, the hypnotherapy field has introduced the
Virtual Gastric Band procedure which simulates the effects of implementing a gastric band but without the invasive surgery.
There is no magic wand for weight loss and it does demand commitment and persistence and ignoring the child in you that every now and then rebels against anything it doesn't want to do because "
it's just too hard" - like weight loss.
