It is human nature to try and determine ways to do things in an much easier way. Probably, it is because of this that weight loss supplements sell so well. The money spent on weight loss programs and supplements in the United States today amounts to $57,947,568. Although so much is being spent, many people are still left unsatisfied with the results of these weight loss products.
For effective and healthy weight loss, regular exercise and a healthy balanced diet is needed. Just depending on weight loss supplements does not work and the results achieved are often temporary. Sometimes they even have adverse effects on the body. Let us take a closer look at some of the major disadvantages of taking these weight loss products.
1.Lack of effectiveness: The makers of weight loss supplements make unrealistic claims about the results achieved with their products. However, there is little evidence to prove those claims. According to reports by MayoClinic.com, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effectiveness of weight loss pills like country mallow, chitosan and bitter orange. The report lists ephedra and conjugated linoleic acid as possibly effective and guar gum as possibly ineffective.
2.Heart complications, stroke and depression: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings in 2008 and 2009 to around 69 weight loss products, citing concerns about undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients as the reason. Many of these products contained a controlled substance known as sibutramine, which causes seizures, high blood pressure, palpitations, rapid heart beat, stroke and even heart attack. Another component of these products was found to be rimonobant, which is associated with increased risks of suicidal thoughts and depression.
3.Liver problems: Some of the weight loss supplements, both prescription as well as over the counter ones, have been associated with the occurrence of liver failure. The FDA has warned that people taking such medicines should contact health professionals immediately if they experience symptoms of liver injury, such as yellow eyes, loss of appetite and itching.
4.Lack of safety standards: Diet supplements and weight loss helps do not fall in the same safety regulation standards as prescription drugs. Manufacturers of such weight loss aids only need to produce limited proof of effectiveness and safety before these products go on sale. It is only after they are on sale that the FDA monitors its safety and issues recalls or bans if they prove to be dangerous.
