Question: How big a role does diet play in controlling Crohn's symptoms?
Answer: Patients with Crohn's disease often have decreased appetites, which can affect their ability to get the daily nutrition needed for good health and nutrition from food. Crohn's disease is associated with diarrhea and this is a further cause poor absorption of necessary nutrients. No diet has been proven effective for preventing Crohn's disease, but it is very important that people who have Crohn's disease follow a soft but nutritious diet and avoid any foods that seem to worsen symptoms.
Question: Are there any foods that all Crohn's patients are told not to ever eat?
Answer: It has never been established that any certain food or food group causes Crohn's disease. However, when a Crohn's patient is having a symptom flare-up they are encouraged not to eat such foods as bulky grains, hot spices, alcohol, and milk products. These foods can increase diarrhea and cramping.
Question: What about supplements? Should I take them?
Answer: The doctor may recommend nutritional supplements, especially for children whose growth has been slowed down. Special high-calorie liquid drinks are sometimes used for this purpose. Crohn's patients should take vitamin supplements only on their doctor's advice.
Question: What about herbal supplements? Can they help?
Answer: Herbal medicine has been around for centuries. However, because there are no standards and no approval process by any governmental agency, doctors rarely recommend herbal supplements in the United States. They are widely used in European countries. It would not be wise to use herbal supplements without first checking with your doctor. Adverse reactions between prescription medications and herbs are possible. Always notify your doctor of all medications you are taking, herbal, over the counter and other prescriptions.
