What to expect
At first, you may notice a small lump or swelling under your areola (the dark area around your nipple). This is the breast bud. The breast bud will gradually enlarge and become more rounded. Your nipples may also become larger and darker.
As your breasts grow, you may experience some discomfort, such as:
* Tenderness
* Swelling
* Itching
* Aching
* Tingling
* Pain
These symptoms are usually mild and will go away after a few months.
How to cope with breast growth
Here are some tips for coping with breast growth:
* Wear a supportive bra. A well-fitting bra can help to reduce discomfort and provide support for your growing breasts.
* Apply a cold compress to your breasts. This can help to reduce swelling and pain.
* Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These medications can help to relieve pain and discomfort.
* Talk to your doctor or nurse. If you have any concerns about your breast growth, talk to your doctor or nurse. They can help to answer your questions and provide support.
Breast development stages
Breast development typically occurs in five stages:
* Stage 1: The breast is flat and there is no breast bud.
* Stage 2: A small breast bud develops under the areola.
* Stage 3: The breast bud continues to grow and the areola widens.
* Stage 4: The breast takes on a more rounded shape and the nipple protrudes.
* Stage 5: The breast is fully developed and mature.
Not all girls will progress through these stages at the same rate. Some girls may skip a stage or two, while others may stay in a stage for a longer period of time.
When to be concerned
In most cases, breast growth is a normal part of puberty. However, there are some cases when you should be concerned about your breast growth. These include:
* If your breasts are growing very rapidly
* If one breast is significantly larger than the other
* If you have any discharge from your nipples
* If you have any pain that is severe or does not go away after a few months
If you are concerned about your breast growth, talk to your doctor or nurse. They can help to determine if there is a problem.
