Folic Acid and Pregnancy: How Much

How much folic acid do you need before and during pregnancy?

The recommended daily intake of folic acid for women of childbearing age trying to conceive is 400mcg. This amount is increased to 600mcg per day for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Taking the right amount of folic acid in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is particularly important for preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida. However, since neural tube closes 28 days after conception, it's important to start taking folic acid at least one month before conception and continue until the end of the twelfth week of pregnancy.
