Over the last few decades in the US, UK and parts of Europe weight gain has become a serious issue. People live less active lives and consume much more fatty foods. Also, many of our modern jobs have little or no physical labour. Reducing your percentage of body fat is very important, as it's closely linked to illness from heart diesis for instance.
Some people convince them selves that the gain in weight and fat was not their fault, and they are just 'big boned' or 'it's my hormones'. Though this is true in some cases, most of the people that make these claims, it's a self-prognosis, so they don't have to accept responsibility.
Thinking back, can you pin point when you started to gain your belly fat? Did you start comfort eating? Did you stop doing sport or general exercise? For some women having children can mess up with their hormones, so even after birth they cannot successfully lose weight.

Therefore though it does require more effort, you need to pay attention to the number of calories in the food you eat.
To improve your diet, learning how to cook is a vital skill. It is possible and some foods can taste almost exactly the same, and is part of the reason for the phase 'empty calories'.
