Aside from the previously known risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and colorectal cancer, belly fat may cause serious damage to our brain neurons, according to recent research.
Recent study suggested that excess fat around the midsection increases one's risk of dementia or Alzheimers disease later in life. Even those who are of normal weight are at a high risk if they have large bellies. Keeping those fats on the waist may be a danger to your brain functions.
Dementia: Definition and TypesDementia is a brain disorder associated with senility, inability to communicate properly, inability to solve problems or control one's emotions, disorientation, or changes in personality, mood and behavior.
The two types of dementia are, 1) Cortical dementia, and 2) Subcortical dementia. Dementias that result from cerebral cortex disorder are cortical dementias while those that arises from disorder beneath the cortex are known as subcortical. The former typically involves severe loss of memory and loss of ability to understand language. Subcortical dementia involves slow changes in personality and attention span, and their thinking slows down. Dementia that involves both is known as multi-infarct.
Alzheimers disease is an example of cortical dementia while Huntington's or Parkinson's disease is a form of subcortical dementia. Subcortical dementia may also arise from syphilis or subdural hematoma.
Dementia and its TreatmentDepending on the cause of dementia, some disorders may be treatable. Eighty to ninety percent of dementia, however, has no cure. Available drugs and therapy cannot cure or repair brain damage but simply improve the patient's condition or slow down the onset of the disease. Possible dementia later in life caused by excess fat around your belly can be preventable.
